The first graders have been learning about adjectives the last couple of weeks.  Ask you child to give you an example of an adjective.

Last week the students learned about the structure of a story.  The structure of a story consists of the characters, setting and major events.  After your child gets done reading a book, ask them what the characters, setting and events were.

The first graders played penny plate in math.  This is a fantastic game for them to play to strengthen their knowledge of sums of 10.

At home, your child can practice sums of 10 by getting 10 pennies and grabbing some with their left hand and then grabbing the leftovers with their right and then writing down the numbers.  They can write left and right on the top of a piece of paper and then put the pennies on each side to count and then write down.

  • There will not be any spelling words this week, so no test on Friday.  The first graders are going to be doing a PBL on safety, so they will be researching a safety topic and writing an informative book on that topic.
  • The first grade students will have 3 guest speakers on Monday morning.  They are going to be talking to the first graders about bike, bus and weather safety.  Our field trip to the Waukee Fire Station and Police Department is Monday, October 3rd.  We will leave at 1:00 and return around 3:00.
  • Your child brought home their Unit 1 math test on Friday.  Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns over the test.
  • The first graders will be taking Unit 1 reading test on Wednesday and Thursday.  The test will be taken on the computer.
