This week in math, the first graders worked on counting by 1's and 5's and estimating.  There will be math homework this week.  It should not take your child a long time to complete.  This is a great way for parents to see what skill they worked on in math that day.  Please let me know if you have any questions about the homework.  It needs to be returned to school the next day.  I will have the first graders write the due date on top of it.

The first graders got to shop for books last week.  What that means is that they find 5-8 books in the classroom library to put in their book boxes.  They can put library books or books from home too.  We talked about how the books should be a "good fit" book.  That means they should know most of the words, it is something that interests them and it shouldn't be too easy.

One of the reading rotations that the first graders will do in the morning is called Read to Self.  At this rotation they read books from their book box, they find a good spot and stay there and read the whole time with a voice volume zero.  If you do not know what voice volume zero is, ask your child.  The students did a great job last week reading!

Another reading rotation that the first graders will do is called Listen to Reading.  When they are here they will be listening to books on the computer or doing iReady reading lessons.  There are 2 more reading rotations that the first graders will learn about this week.

Mrs. Lamoureux  stopped in on Tuesday to show us a fun activity using Seesaw on the iPads.  The students used QR codes that were posted around the room.  They did a nice job collaborating with each other.  We will be using Seesaw throughout the school year.  I know some parents are familiar with it from last year.  Please click on the link to watch the video to get a better idea of how the first graders will be using it this year.  Seesaw Video

  • Spelling Test on Friday.  Your child will get the pink home list on Tuesday.  This list does not need to be returned to school.
  • The first graders will be starting reading enrichment groups this week.  We are very lucky to have a lot of teachers during our enrichment time.  Your child may see Miss Saylor, Miss Hingtgen, Mrs. Bertman, Mrs. Lamoureux, Mrs. Hinde, Mrs. Schmidt, Mrs. Gordon or me.  This is a great opportunity to move the students around and focus on specific reading skills.  I will contact you if I have concerns about your child.  These groups will change, so if you have any questions or concerns, please ask!  The first graders will be doing the FAST test on September 7th and 8th.  This is one of our reading assessments that we give 3 times a year.  Miss Saylor will be testing all of the first graders.
  • Butter braid order forms are due on Monday, September 12th.
  • School pictures are Monday, September 12th.
