How can we be safe?

The Van Meter Fire Department stopped by for a visit to the elementary Thursday morning.    We then had a great learning experience with the Waukee Fire Department and Police Station that afternoon.   This was a great opportunity for the students to learn some helpful safety tips.  This was a great kick off for our Safety PBL.  I want to let you know that starting next week, your child will be learning how to research a safety topic using computers, books and videos.  I've provided a link on what and why we are doing a PBL.  Please check it out and let me know if you have any questions.   Project Based Learning

The first graders were able to look and get inside a police car.

The students had fun getting to look inside of the fire truck.

The class learned how to play Domino Top-It.  Can you guess who the winner is in the picture?  There will be math homework on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday this week.

I will be sending home 4 paper books with your child on Fridays.  (next Friday there won't be any because the students will be taking the Unit 1 test)  These books with go along with what we have been working on in reading.  This week we worked on short u words.  Please have your child read these books at home.  They do not need to be returned.

  • The first graders will be taking the Unit 1 reading test this week, so there will not be any spelling words this week.
  • Thursday, October 15th David M. Sargent, Jr. will be visiting our school.  An order form was sent home, so please fill it out if you want to buy any books and return it with your child by Thursday.
  • Picture retakes are October 21st.
  • The Halloween Party will be on Friday, the 30th in the afternoon.  If you signed up to help you will be getting an email from me later this week.
