Welcome Back!

It was great seeing everyone Thursday night at open house.  You will get a Dogg Blogg update weekly.  If you wish not to receive it or would like me to add another email address, please let me know.  Your child can enter the classroom at 8:05.  Their school day begins at 8:15 and ends at 3:30.  The first graders will have milk and a snack in the afternoon.  A snack calendar was included with the open house packet.  Please read through the snack list that was attached to the calendar, so that you know what snacks are safe for our classmate that has a wheat, tree nut and peanut allergy.

I'm looking forward to another great year of first grade.  This is my 12th year of teaching at Van Meter. I have two sons.  Porter is a 4th grader and Tate is a 2nd grader.  My family and I love cheering on the Iowa Hawkeyes and the San Francisco Giants.  I enjoy playing sports and LOVE to read and shop!  Please do not hesitate to email or call with questions or concerns.

The class will be starting off the year with our new reading series, Journeys. There is a great online site for the students to use at school and home.  The kids will get their usernames and passwords in September.  The first graders will have a weekly spelling list.  They will get the list on Monday and take the test on Friday.  There will not be a list the first week of school

For math, the first graders will be doing Everyday Mathematics.  It has a great online site that the students will be using at school and they can also use it at home.  Usernames and passwords will be sent home in September.
The first graders will have a math homework for most nights.  The homework should not take long.  It is intended for a quick review of the lesson that day.

  • First day of school, August 24th.
  • Early dismissal at 1:30 on Friday, August 28th.
  • Related Arts schedule:  Monday-Art, Tuesday-Library, Wednesday-Music, Friday-Guidance.  Your child will have P.E. 5 days a week and Spanish 4 days a week.
